More artisticly made than most slashers and with some psychological depth as well. Still, at its heart it is a gory slasher with some nasty Tom Savini special effects so anyone looking for a decent genre offering will be satisfied here.

He's a maniac. A maniac at the door. And he's killing like he's never killed a whore.

spoiler And perhaps the greatest moment in the film. Maniac is slightly monotonous and has a substantial amount of excessive breathing to cover for the lack of story line. It's pretty straightforward throughout, but enjoyable none the less.

Pretty bad movie, though there are some effective sequences. Why did they think that the relationship between the stunningly beautiful Caroline Munro and the fat, ugly, sweaty, mumbling, mother-fixated maniac would be in any way believable?

I'm surprised by how interesting this turned out to be, honestly. I mean, it's not Silence of the Lambs, but Spinell makes Frank Zito a really complex, pathetic figure, and the film's horror comes as much from his damaged worldview as it does the stalking and killing - more so, I'd say. It ends up feeling less like a slasher film and more like something far more disturbing. It's not a great film, but it's better than I think its reputation led me to expect.

Following a NYC serial killer, it's not a good film; but the practical effects and the overall sleazy/trashy tone helps. 5/10.
