Unwatchable. Roberts' and Malkovich's accents keep arbitrarily appearing and disappearing and it's terribly dull. Also, no one recognizes John Malkovich with longer hair?? Give me a break! 1 year 7 months ago

Definitely not good enough for an official list, let alone two. 4 years 6 months ago

I never read the book, so I have no idea if book is good or not, but after seeing the movie, I feel this is the conversation that transpired to make the movie:

Hollywood Person 1: Oh my God, I just read this script it is based on a book called Mary Reilly, we need to make this film.

Hollywood Person 2: Oh really what is about?

HP 1: It is a horror film that is the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde told from the perspective of another character.

HP2: Oh really, I am intrigued, is it a cop assigned to case? Gabriel John Utterson's perspective, or maybe a victim of Mr. Hyde?

    HP1: No, better, His maid!

    HP2: Uhh, what?

HP1: Yup, Her name is Mary Reilly. Hence the title!

HP2: Oh was she in the original story?

HP1: No she is an original character, a nice Irish lady who is a maid in the house. She reports to Mr. Poole from the original story.

HP2: I am confused, does she go along with him or witness the murders or something?

HP1: No, but he trusts her and lets her in on some secrets, kind of, and she starts to suspect something is wrong. She also gets to clean his bloody clothes and hanky. She also kinda falls in love with him and helps protect him.

HP2: umm, ya I still don't get why we should make this movie.

HP1: Well the budget will only need to be around 12 million and we had Tim Burton interested, but lost him, I am betting we can get Daniel Day-Lewis for the lead and Uma Thruman!

HP2: I like those two, done here is the check make it happen. If you can't get those two, perhaps we can get Julia Roberts and John Malkovich.

HP1: Great, this is going to be great, can't wait to get started on this.

Skip this movie, it is boring and has some terrible acting and Julia Roberts accent is so bad it is actually distracting. But that could be a plus since nothing shown on screen is worth watching anyway. Plus it has like 2 or 3 Wilhelm screams in the opening. No movie needs or should have that many. It shows up again later in the movie as well. What a waste of 2 great actors.
