Public Enemy

It's taken me a couple days and I'm still not halfway through yet. Hopefully something changes and this turns into something that isn't just long and boring.

Full, boring, dark, and uninteresting. Some of the snow scenes were nicely lit and photographed but otherwise, nothing interesting here.

it is very evident michael cimino was inspired so much by this movie's style that he'd wanted to make his own.

the pace and look (thanks to vilmos zsigmond) are so similar.

I guess I didn't get it... To me it was incredibly dull and it felt like a 4 hour movie about nothing.

A really interesting take on the western, with a gunslinger spoiler, lots of long static shots interspersed with some more spaghetti western-inspired quick zooms to closeup. Julie Christie really shines as a prostitute with a heart of gold nugget.

The audio mixing is a bit unintelligible, partly by Altman's intention to capture both dialogue and background noise and partly because Altman's experimentation with multi-track recording to accomplish this wasn't quite ready for primetime.

Not only is it rather decidedly not "long and boring," it is, in fact, one of the greatest, most beautiful and haunting and enthralling films ever made.

Easy to see how opinions over this decidedly "other" Anti-Western are divided. I too found the buildup pretty uninviting but the photography and soundtrack by Leonard Cohen magnificent. And what a wonderful climax in the snow that is.
I'm usually having problems with the films by Robert Altman, though. This is not for all - you have to see which party you belong to.
