A lovely, charming film - like the cynical characters in the film it can't help but finally win you over.

Right up there with 'It's A Wonderful Life', a true Christmas classic!

Very warm family film that still stands its ground after more than 60 years.

This one, along with White Christmas and It's a Wonderful Life are pretty much the definitive trio of classic Christmas films for me. Gwenn really shines in his portrayal as Kris Kringle and O'Hara adds a great deal to the film, even a very young Natalie Wood serves as the perfect character to carry along the skepticism of believing in Santa Claus until slowly being won over, much like the audience. There's also a great deal of humor in the dialog that elevates the film. It's the total package.

A very interesting backstory for this particular one. The heads of Macy's and Gimbels reserved their judgment on whether to allow their names to be used until after the entire film was made. It was something of a miracle that both of them liked it and gave permission. If either one had said no, there's a strong chance this treasure might have been relegated to obscurity.

Oh, and go B&W for this one, colorized classic movies are yuck.

A fine movie, too less of wintry snowy Christmas feeling only. Yes, slightly better than new, the recording from 1994 (which has more of the Xmas feelings), but I do not understand how it can be so much more acclaimed!(?) Good acting.

How to make a Christmas classic: Above all, I think you need it to be charming. And Miracle on 34th Street (1947) fits the bill very nicely. Everyone knows the ending, but there's lots more to like even if it's the shenanigans during the trial that drew laughter out of me. Edmund Gwenn is perfect as the "real Santa Claus", or an old man who believes himself to be so, but nevertheless lives in a home in Long Island and accepts a job as Macy's Department Store Santa. Sometimes believing something makes it real enough, and his plan to bring the spirit of Christmas back into the already too commercial holiday seems to work. But the harder cases are the family he latches on to - his boss played by Maureen O'Hara whose heart has been broken and now no longer allows any frivolous imagination in her life, and her therefore too-logical daughter played by a tiny Natalie Wood. But there are a lot of fun supporting performances to, and pretty soon everyone must agree that there MUST be a Santa, and so why not this particular one? Adults may or may not enjoy Christmas and its trappings, but do it for the kids at least!

I tend to watch this each year - including only a couple of weeks ago - but saw it on the big screen for the first time on Christmas day. I am visiting Belgium, so saw it with the added bonus of both French and Dutch subtitles! It is still wonderful.

A Department Store Santa says he's real... Charming & amusing classic tale that avoids being too sweet. 9/10.
