PS. gregmnewman's link is legit, it's just harder to get to the video when you don't understand Slovene.
This is a short documentary about Slovenia's most important architect Jože Plečnik. We follow him when he's walking around the city of Ljubljana, which is the capital of Slovenia. We see that almost all of the modern city is made by him and his vision. We see for instance the inside and outside of the famous Franciscan church in Šiška, National and University Library (NUK), the Žale cemetary, the many bridges in Ljubljana (including the Triple bridge), the market place Tržnica, a dam on the river Ljubljanica, the promenade in the park Tivoli. He also made the design for Castle Hradcany in Prague and Zacherlhaus in Vienna.
The documentary also says that there are some people who are really close with the architect - stonecutters, carpenters, plumbers, blacksmiths...
Jože Plečnik studied in Vienna under Otto Wagner and so he was heavily influenced by him but soon he incorporated elements from ancient Greek and Roman architecture, so it's modern and antique at the same time. He also did almost all of the furnishings in his buildings: he mixed stone and iron, sheet metal and wood.
He also said (summarized in the documentary): "He knows that the building, though artistically designed, is nevertheless a stranger in the midst of living nature, until it is decorated with it's green embrace, thus accepting it as it's own." 10 years 6 months ago -
