This is a proper love story, not La la land.
Also, the colours in this movie are so wonderful, it should win an Oscar for Best achievement in cinematography.
Mahershala Ali takes command of this film for the first part, earning his Oscar, and the film never really recovers when his character dies (offscreen) between the first and second acts. Ends up as a powerful statement on growing up different in a harsh urban environment, but does drag a little between set pieces.
Probably one of the best movies I've ever seen. Visually arresting, the score is gorgeous, very strong main and supporting cast whose acting makes me forget I'm at a movie at all. And Barry Jenkins is an absolute wizard for creating one cohesive character with three different actors of different ages. Seamless. The only downside to Moonlight is that I think my friends are getting really tired of me talking about how great it is.
I think this story will be UTTERLY UNRELATABLE for most people who see it. But, as Chinua Achebe puts it, "It's not difficult to identify with somebody like yourself, somebody next door who looks like you. What's more difficult is to identify with someone you don't see, who's very far away, who's a different color, who eats a different kind of food. When you begin to do that then literature is really performing its wonders." This movie is performing its wonders.

Important movie. Beautiful movie. Good photo, good acting, good layout - especially if you do not read the plot before! Stylish movie poster (three-part face). Don't know if you watch the movie several times. Won 3 Oscar. 99/100 in metascore on IMDb!
