Not terrible but every character is a cliche. There isn't much to set this apart from any other coming-of-age film except perhaps its bucolic setting and the American/Canadian dichotomy. Most of the latter is bogged down by blunt comparison and stereotyping (coffee vs tea; Sandra's reserved and upright parents vs the casual condescension and materialism), but as a nostalgia piece it makes some sense to present Canada's cousin south of the border as it is imagined. The distance between the two cultures is nicely emphasized when Butch asks Sandra and her friends who they think will get to the moon first--"us" or the Russians? "What do you mean 'us'?" they respond.
