The first Japanese movie that couldn't hold my interest. Neither the plot nor scenery impressed me. Except for the train in the beginning, I don't think it accurately translated the truly horrific conditions of war.

Excellent movie, the first one of a trilogy about WWII in the eyes of a Japanese humanist. This first one depicts life in the Japanese prisoner-of-war camps. How the Chinese were treated. Very interesting.
