I was stunned into silence for ten minutes after the film ended. Honestly, one of the best I've ever seen. The plot had me guessing all the way through, and the twist was so brutal. Absolute genius cinema. I could praise Oldboy for days!
Based on a manga I've never heard of, it's the story of a man who gets mysteriously imprisoned for 15 years, then released and given 5 days to find out why. Its comic book roots are visible in the clever editing and camera work I've come to expect from Asian cinema, but it's the story more than the style that really gripped me. Oldboy features some very shocking images and plot twists, and I never quite knew where it was going. I'm as impressed with it visually as anything. Whether showing something pretty or ugly, the screen drips with lusciousness.
Just a word of advice: avoid the dubbed version like the plague. I watched it with dubs and the voice acting ruined the film's tone and I didn't like it. Years later I watched Oldboy again but with subtitles only, and it was every bit as good as intended to be.
This movie is like a partially burned, cheese omelette. Delicious at times, too much at others, and ripe with the potential to cling to my innards in both pleasant and horrible ways for many years to come. Amazing choreography, wonderful music and a sickeningly perfect twist are the feathers in the film's cap. An anime-esque, over-the-top villain, and some awkward pacing/dialogue moments are the blackeyes. Not for the faint of heart!
i watched it after many my friends told to and i though it was really boring. i was really confused, did not regonize any charcters. i also say that the subtitles are a little distracting.
maybe the american version will be of better make.
Saw it finally and was stunned totally. The soundtrack is a collector's item and the kind of vendetta and payback shown in this film, are hard to find in any other. Great acting by the male lead and all the support characters.
Surreal stuff, particularly when the film reveals some of the key moments like the flashback and also the reason for the 15 years in prison.
And the screenplay is one of a kind and constantly keeps us hooked and on our toes.
expected much more from it due to recommendations and the reputation it enjoys
turns out to have poor one-dimensional characters with ridiculous motives, lame predictable plot and way too long sex scenes featuring annoying asian ladies (if they're enjoying it, why do they put on the act of being slaughtered?)

It was okay but didn't really buy the hypnosis shit. This film is based on a manga, btw. The mangaka is Garon Tsuchiya.
And of course, the revenge is not justified.
