Personally this little movie will always have a special part in my heart. I'm so glad that I kept delaying to watch it, because when I finally did it was in a moment in my life where I could relate to almost everything the main character was going through. Finally stopping for a moment to actually question about your life and if everything that happened until now had any meaning is something everyone have to go through sometime in their lives, and this movie portrays it simply beautifully.

This movie is beautiful and I don't mean just the animation style.
There are so many memorable scenes, some are more relatable to one person, some more to another person. I think everybody who ever had struggles growing up and learning to understand the world can relate somehow with this movie.

Another excellent movie by Studio Ghibli, telling the story of a 27-year old woman whose trip to the countryside summons memories of when she was 10 years old.

It was a very nice surprise. It is incredible that this movie is nearly 30 years old...it talks about memories of childhood for sure, but also the relation of human with the Earth, how we should be more connected to our lands, fields. It is still so accurate.

Good movie, although it's obviously more relatable to women, but still I liked it very much.
Besides the main themes of the film there were many enjoyable little moments that can only be found in Ghibli films, such as the pineapple eating scene (it reminded me of the times when our family tried a coconut for the first time, I had the same reaction) :D.

Looks like the unfinished background on white paper is really Isao Takahata's thing. Princess Kaguya and The Yamadas had it, and 1991's Only Yesterday plays with it to differentiate between flashbacks to Taeko's time in fifth grade (set in the 1960s), and the full, detailed frames of the 1982 present. It's a play on memory, this collection sparked by a trip to the country which she was denied as a child that year, but that eventually leads her to something buried in her, which we might today call impostor syndrome, forcing her to question whether she is really meant for the country or just a tourist poser. Along the way, we meet her family and class mates in memorable vignettes, and the people she meets on her vacation in the present, all well supported by the subtle (animated) acting. I don't mind the slow, reflective pace, though the present-day conversations about farming felt a like a heavy-handed manifesto and went on too long. All is forgiven at the end though, where the fantasy available to animation makes memory and reality combine in just the sweetest way. Great, great pay-off.

It's not among my favorite Ghibli films - and I could have done without the painfully saccharine song at the end - but it's still pretty wonderful.

Having just seen this, I might actually rather buy Navy Seals Buds Class 234 Discovery Channel.
