Terribly underrated. It really makes me want to watch more Naruse - sadly, his films aren't widely available except for this one.

This is an amazing film by Naruse. Wow. A great character that is resilient and practical about life-- that dares to dream a little... only to go back to where she started... facing life with a fake smile and glass in hand. Extremely recommended. Deserves to be in a thousand lists.
