Very surprised by the critical comments below. It was such a captivating movie! Not a cinematic masterpiece per se, but the theme and story between brothers (and of brotherly love) were beautiful and heartfelt, and the journey was a very suspenseful ride (both me and my boyfriend's hearts were racing / palms were sweaty during several parts haha). I really did not expect it to be so good and meaningful, threaded with many great life lessons/themes on family, love, faith, and risks. Exceeded my expectations!
I'm surprised that this has several critical comments.
Personally it was an enjoyable, heart-warming film and I was on the edge of my seat in the second half.
The premise seems to be weirdly judge...the whole D&D being historical instead of fantastic in a fantastic world is kind of awesome. And the story is touching even if not all original as a missing father and good brother
Let me try to phrase this without sounding negative: Onward is a really nice CGI-animated adventure with varying degrees of fantasy and comedy - especially in the exposition - and action - increasingly more during its run. Characters are nice, greatly voiced and the animation is pretty solid, obviously (it's Pixar, come on). There's one moment in the climax which even felt heart-melting to me (
Ian just looking from afar at the silhouette of his soon to be gone father - intense and a great shot through the frame of debris!
).
It's hard to deny that the way the plot is executed is formulaic, on the other hand, and sounds much less magic than the premise does on (pen &) paper. The allusions to fantasy motifs are fun and some of their realizations are great (like the dragon monster or the biker elves), but there weren't many of them. As expectations for Pixar are huge, we rightfully await more creativity from them in a field like this. Onward could burst of magic!
So, overall, Onward lands in the midfield of Pixar works for me, along with the sequels to Monster Inc. and Finding Nemo or Toy Story 4, I guess, none of which were bad. We just know the guys are able to pull off more.
6+/10
Lovely and exciting story with just the right length, but no high ratings from me. Really good CGI. I saw with English speech, next time with the children with Swedish speech. No top lists at all, surprisingly enough!(?)
It doesn't feel like a Pixar movie at all. At no point did I feel a sense of wonder like in Wall-E. The way it touches on heavier subjects like not knowing a parent was done way better by Big Hero 6 and Up. Nothing unexpected happened. It's just like a generic kids movie without much further thought. It dragged and by 30 minutes in I wanted it to be over.
The only part that shined was Julia Louis Dreyfus's voice acting. I think it might be physically impossible for her not to kill a role.

An easy watch. Not anything special. Pixar can do better!Greta90
Waited for that one but turned out to be just another Pixar movie. Well done as usual but not top-shelf. No well written jokes either.baraka92
The world building is a mess but the story has a lot of heart, elevated by an outstanding cast.Overall, very enjoyable. I don’t think it deserved to be Pixar’s first bomb.

Very lazily written and basically a modern-day direct to video movie.gobberpooper
