Some good dialogue, and Streep is great as ever, but disappointingly glosses over the brutal realities of colonial occupation; black African characters barely even get to speak, and the movie seems to expect us to admire Streep's quest to protect "my Gikuyu" instead of acknowledging her and her husband as the invaders and land thieves they are. (Even Dinesen's original book was much more interested in its Gikuyu characters than this movie.) Hopefully Hollywood will one day start making movies about Africa with African main characters instead of European transplants. Something like Gikuyu author Ngugi wa Thiong'o's A Grain of Wheat would be a great counterpoint to this one.
Boring. No connection with the characters. I could not care less what happened to them.
Back to the Future wasn't even nominated that year, but which movie do people still remember?
