Passchendaele written, directed and starred in by Paul Gross. I know it got mixed reviews, but how many Canadian WWI movies are there? I for one will defend it. Yes, almost half the film takes place back in Alberta, love affairs and all that, but while the romance does take a lot of room (and its music rather cloying), I didn't find it out if place I did in other historical films such as Titanic (where it trivialized the real tragedy) or Pearl Harbor (where history was completely mangled). That part of the film is about the toll war takes first and foremost, and creates a context for the ensuing action. And what action! That was one brutal war. And films should honor its soldiers more. 7 years 4 months ago

A tiny bit amazed how much some people seem to hate this. Sure it was melodramatic at times (not necessarily a bad thing) and the ending with him lugging the crucifix was heavy-handed (pretty much a bad thing), but I thought the battle scenes were really well executed and highly evocative. It may not show you hundreds or thousands of bodies, but the dirty nasty fighting, the brutal deaths and so on are arguably more effective at conveying the actual experience than just a shot of unidentifiable corpses. 11 years 9 months ago
