Out of a large group of young piano players aspiring to reach the finals and get a top spot in the International Chopin Piano Competition, we follow a handful of contestants from all over the world as they practice, relax, play on stage, and deal with the myriad of emotions this three-week event brings.
To me, the interactions between Hao Rao and this teacher were truly fascinating. They form a sharp contrast to the relationship between 17-year-old Eva Gevorgyan and her teacher; it is hard to not empathize with the former, who has to endure lots of criticism and visibly struggles with the pressure to perform.
Although personally I would have preferred a bit more structure, especially in the first half hour or so, I really liked this documentary. And even though we don't see or hear much of the actual performances on stage, there is plenty of beautiful, timeless Chopin music to enjoy. 1 month 1 week ago
