Detective Pikachu is a film sold entirely upon brand recognition. It can be fun at times, and the Pokémon are cute and well realized; but if not for the brand, it would be forgotten immediately upon viewing. This is the same director who brought us masterpieces such as Jack Black in Gulliver's Travels and.. Shark Tale. Detective Pikachu is directed with approximately the same amount of enthusiasm, innovation, and creativity as those past gems.Scenes are framed as though you handed a smartphone to your grandparent and asked them to take a picture. Characters are somewhere between being ironically self-aware and unknowingly cliché. And, for better or worse, Ryan Reynolds.. will.. not.. shut.. up. Dramatic scenes are undercut by out-of-place one-liners, Pikachu starts singing the OG Pokémon TV theme song for no apparent reason, and it is very difficult to invest in any of what is happening in the story. If you don't see every plot beat coming at least 30 minutes in advance, props to you on attending your very first movie ever, because you have a lot of good ones to look forward to seeing! Detective Pikachu is not one of those good ones. This is a bland and inoffensive family film, with nothing much to say, and a multi-billion dollar warm and fuzzy childhood memory attached.
If you are a Pokémon fan, you should see this film for the novelty factor. It will definitely get a few giggles and smiles out of you. It did for me! For everyone else, I recommend Pokemon 3: The Movie, which has a very nice and heartfelt story, and is probably the best of the 22 currently released Pokémon films (including Detective Pikachu).

Worthwhile watch. They have translated the Pokemon world pretty well to live action. Pikachu is fun. Quite frankly the movie should have been a bit longer, it is rather short and held back by a third act that is not as good as the other two.DisneyStitch
If you aren't a Pokemon fan then I really can't see you getting a whole lot out of it. It's a very meta movie in the franchise and while it has a few low points like the acting in certain scenes, it's worth a watch if you're a fan. I feel like they could've really used this as a nostalgic opportunity to bring all of us back to those days when binders of Pokemon cards were spread over the living room floor... but it didn't quite get there sadly.aniforprez
Script is somewhat predictable but there's definitely some twists in there that I didn't expect. Some real feels at certain points. The world is incredibly well realised and the score is on pointIt's one of those kids movies that you wouldn't be ashamed to go to if you're an adult. It's got some dirty jokes in there too. Quite entertaining and enjoyable. I recommend watching if only to see Pokemon come to life in a non-2D medium

Certainly not the movie of the year but it sure is a lot of fun. If you go into it with the right mindset it's a brilliant, albeit pretty predictable, adventure flick. Also Pikachu is insanely adorable.Windill
The movie starts well, the plot being well set. But then characters start acting fake and the story becomes a bit dull, predictable, etc. What could have been a good detective story turns into boring consumerist déjà-vu.neko's kat
Fun movie to watch. It is predictable that's for sure. I also didn't expect the acting to be spectacular. My only issue was that there was just not enough Pokémon brought to "life". :]

It's definitely for kids. But also shoddily put together, the script is not good. Insanely predictable.HyliaFischer
I liked it. It was pretty cool. I think it's a good movie for both newbies to Pokemon and Pokemon nerds. The third act is a lot weaker than the rest of the film, but it's still worth a watch.Siskoid
While my younger friends can all list off every species of Pokémon, I have only the vaguest memories of the cartoon show and never played the games (I'd say it was more like I was subjected to Pokémon Snap on a couple of occasions). So Pokémon Detective Pikachu makes me feel like other people must feel watching superhero movies. I don't really get most of the references and get no personal joy from them. I realize that when I'm watching comic book movies, I'm on an "Easter Egg hunt", which is part of my enjoyment. Not so here. I came for the absurd concept of Pikachu as a soft-boiled detective and so I wish the movie had leaned further into it. No explanations (just like there are none for the existence of these creatures), just Pikachu solving crimes kind of accidentally in a parody of Noir fiction. Unfortunately, it's more of a superhero narrative with cutesy CG animals, and requires an ending that undoes some of the magic, quite frankly. The father-son stories are psychologically thin and the world-building a little cursory, but Ryan Reynolds is funny as the voice of Pikachu and his half-improvised(-sounding) dialog coupled with the cute animation is the best part of the movie.xianjiro

The HQ was the Cheesegrater in London. I worked in the building next to it!
