Its an alright movie. Perfect casting all around, especially Shelley Duvall. Robin Williams gets lost in this role in the best way. The songs are kinda meh when you first hear them but they actually have been stuck in my head since i recently saw it, so theres that. The humor is very much 1930s cartoon, so some of it is dated and others is timeless but mild.
Where this movie shines is how much it feels like a cartoon. From the acting, the set, the sound effects, and the props, this whole movie feels ripped from the old serial shorts
Awesome movie. The mix of cartoon-like humour and the messiness and liveliness that is Altman's signature is very strange and fun. Love how the songs are mostly mutterd monologues with music!
I was a huge fan of Shelly Duvall in The Shining, so I wanted to see her in other roles, this movie having come out in the same year. I also saw an article saying that the town that was built for the film is still there. The movie itself is a slog to sit through. Turning a 1940s cartoon into a 2 hour live action film where you have to be invested in the plot and dialogue is asking a lot. Most of the characters are borderline retarded and the musical numbers they occassionally bust into are painful to sit through. Robin Williams is decently convincing as Popeye but I couldnt figure out the blonde hair. The only thing the movie has going for it is the set design which is incredible and reminded me a lot of Waterworld. There are a handful of funny moments but overall I couldnt wait for it to end. C-
