Black society of the frontier is rarely shown and would make for interesting subject matter if handled properly, which this film does not. A lacklustre revenge western that loses any social commentary in a haze of sepia flashbacks, dutch tilts and stylised 90's mediocrity.
The opening and closing notes keep going on about 'black cowboys' but the film portrays soldiers-made-fugitives. Technically, cowboys are people who heard cattle. Like Errol Flynn in Dodge City.
Pam Grier gets opening credits but is practically an extra. I spent the majority of the movie waiting for Paul Bartel to make an appearance. 10 years 1 month ago -
