This is not the same school of movie as Samurai Cop 2, or even The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. It's in the same family as The Pee-wee Herman Show, Polyester, the Kuchar brothers shorts, and even to some degree Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Gay camp is a different animal all together from the intentionally SBiG cinema ChrisReynolds and neocowboy are referring to, which are targeted spoofs as they said. Queer cinema lampoons an entire culture using its iconography and touchstones, not just to get laughs, but to subvert an entire experience; it says to an audience, "we both grew up in the same place, but we experienced it in radically different ways." 6 years 2 months ago

Terrible attempt to manufacture a so-bad-its-good movie. Fails as a spoof because the humour falls flat at best and is cringe-worthy at worst, and fails as a pastiche of 50s surf movies because almost everybody camps it up desperately to try and compensate for lack of laughs. Noteworthy for featuring an embarrassing early role for Amy Adams. 11 years 4 months ago

This film appeared 7 years before Tarantino and Rodriguez made faux-grindhouse movies popular and it outshines the majority of subsequent exploitation parodies. It's certainly better than watching actual beach movies from the 50's and 60's.

The problem with manufactured good bad cinema is that by trying to make something intentionally bad for laughs you are defeating the concept of bad films entirely. The great good bad films were made originally in earnest and failed. They have a fan base because they are debacles and we relish the schadenfreude it emotes. So you can never really make a good bad film on purpose because if it does fail it's no good and if works then it's not truly bad, herein lies the paradox.
