What a boring film, no depth, no reason to actually finish it (Other than being able to check it off here of course.)
The sound was all over the place. It went from inaudible whispering to loud gunfire in quick succession, similar to Constantine in terms of annoyance.
The shaky camera technique used alienates the audience, it never feels like it's set in the Great Depression. It feels like a media studies project filmed in a local field.
What a shame, a cast like this and it cannot even provide 10 minutes of entertainment.
I found it to be entertaining enough, the cinematography is both excellent at some points and jarring in others, especially because the difference in camera quality is so different when jumping to a hand-held, for example. It is rather long, feels a bit like an acted documentary at some points. The costumes and atmosphere were excellent, certainly felt like it was in the 1930's.
Never before did I think that a cinematic style would destroy my entire experience, but low and behold this movie used the higher frame rate and it looked terrible
A mediocre script and lack-luster momentum drag this movie down. Performers work well with what they're given, but nothing in the film allows the audience to connect.
Granted, the sound quality isn't the best.. but the plot and characters are actually very good and keep you drawn in until the very end... which doesn't have quite the dramaticism you'd hope for.
How surprising it is when you realize that some actors have no limit? That's what's happening with Christian Bale and Johnny Depp. You just can't distinguish actor from character. You can't tell when one begin and the other ends. Even Dillinger's side smile is perfectly played.
Changing the subject, I can't understand what goes on a director's mind. As if it wasn't slow enough, Michael Mann seems to drag this movie even in the action scenes. Don't get me wrong, these are 140 minutes of 'must see', but you will get bored. Eventually you will realize that you are sat watching a movie. I don't know why it's a trend now, but Hollywood is killing the soundtracks. Countless minutes of the sound of Thompsons shooting around and blinking in front of you.
On the other side, there's the truly unique cinematography implied in here. From the mentioned blinking fire guns quickly changing to handycams running through the woods. It's amazing to see the dark 30's Chicago at night in such quality.
Giving the cast, the overwelming actuations and the cinematography, but keeping apart the boredom: it is one of the best movies of this century.
I hate this movie, it's too long, not at all interesting and the dialogue (if any) sucks. The movie has a few good actors in it but their roles aren't good enough, I blame the writers though, not the actors.
Hellbent Exodus it's not about the actors. Its about the real men that actually when through that in real life. John Dillinger was a legend and that was the whole beauty of the movie, was about john dillinger. So that why they didn't show bale as much. R.I.P John Herbert Dillinger
