In terms of good ol' action adventures, this one is a true masterpiece! Fun, good hearted, well acted, beautifully shot and very clever script!

Indiana Jones is the quintessential American hero. Much like James Bond and Sherlock Holmes for the Brits, Jones represents a perfect blend of brains and brawn in a way that seems impossible for the modern man to possesses. He's as comfortable lecturing on obscure and forgotten cultures of the distant past as he is going bare knuckle with the brutes of the present. Sort of. He's just making it up as he goes!

The sheer number of people who complain about this film being dated or predictable explains to why Man of Steel and the Transformers films make so much money. People have bad taste. This is as perfect and flawless as cinema gets.

Doesn't pop up on 19 lists for no reason. Great iconic fun that rockets along. So many great scenes. Plus Harrison Ford is unforgettable...and that music!

If you come into this expecting anything but a cheesy, campy action flick, you're going to be sorely disappointed. But for what it's worth, it's a really great cheesy, campy action flick.

@scruluce: No it shoudn't. "Raider of the Lost Ark" is the film's original title and that's what's here and on IMDb.

The first Indiana Jones movie may still be the best, or at least has the best female lead and the most classic moments. If you only see one, this is it.

About as magical, perfect, entertaining, thrilling and hilarious as any film could get. The definitive blockbuster that introduced the world to the greatest protagonist of all time, Indiana Jones! Any who call this movie boring are those who enjoy films like Transformers or Twilight. Raiders of the Lost Ark is a masterpiece of a film

Hollywood has incorporated notions of Orientalism
into many of its adventure films, and Indiana Jones
is no exception. Throughout the original trilogy, Indiana's escapades lead him throughout the Middle East and India. In these adventures, Jones comes in contact with the stylized Eastern culture that Hollywood so often uses.

Steven Spielberg has a flare for the exotic. This can be examined at a larger level to explain why Orientalism is popular in western cinema. Orientalism, though by definition foreign, is a familiar concept. When Jones is thrown into the "Eastern" world, we choose to root for him (and his western values). Western cinema emphasizes the "good" of the West versus the "bad" of the foreign East. We root for the protagonist who aligns with our values, in this case Indiana. In this way, Orientalism has become a very popular tool for directors to garner sympathy for their protagonists. Indiana Jones is just one of many examples that fits this widely used archetype.
