The other review doesn't mention that Shakespeare's poetry has been assiduously mangled for this adaptation by Julian Fellowes, changing the text from Shakespeare's Early Modern English to a sort of modern cod-Shakespearean approximation. E.g. “No warmth, no breath shall testify thou livest” becomes “there will be no sign of life within you”. Why did he do this? Well, he explains:
quote:to see the original in its absolutely unchanged form, you require a kind of Shakespearean scholarship, and you need to understand the language and analyse it and so on. I can do that because I had a very expensive education; I went to Cambridge.
If you are watching this, you are not listening to Shakespeare. You are listening to its vandalism by an arrogant elitist. 5 years 10 months ago -

By far the worst adaptation of a literary piece of work that I've ever seen. Every one (including two of the greatest actors I've seen) overacted their parts to a point that was comical. Many people in my screening laughed at parts that should have never been funny. The director made a joke out of one of the greatest tragedies ever written and while I'm scared that it was intended I'm even more scared to think that it wasn't. Don't waste your money or just go to your local dollar theater if it means that much to you. 10 years 6 months ago
