At first you think it's just an unfathomably tedious movie, until a little girl tortures a cat, then it becomes an unfathomably tedious and offensive movie.Even when I *like* a movie, I prefer it either stays under 2.5 hours or formats itself as a serial meant to be watched in installments. Less is more.

Which can't fit in 2.5 hours max, it's not interesting and gonna lose many viewers. This movie, this bunch of pictures is a head-kick. I think it's art, but an awful way of self expression with ideas but Tarr Béla still thinks this way of storytelling works...but it's not. Some said it's a masterpiece, this sentence is on the back of the DVD: "I wish I could watch it again and again every day."Hmmm...well, let me wish to this unknown person who said that: I'd really have a look on your face after a month :D

The seemingly endless animal abuse scene really put me off, but other than that, a very good atmospheric film.niesl2
Whoohoo, finally watched it! Very intriguing movie. Give it a chance, even if the length scares you. I'm glad I did.haipayazoo
I truly believe it is only hipsters that like Satantango. I believe 7.5 hours is rather excessive for a film such as this. I'll never understand why people enjoy this film or say that they are "never bored." It certainly seemed interesting with it's multiple POV style of narration, but the substance, or rather lack of, left a lot to be desired. The film has some interesting cinematography, but nothing that I would consider fantastic or noteworthy. The biggest problem I have are some of the long shots. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy long shots and slow-paced films, but most of the scenes I enjoy from these long shots show certain signs of progression. One particular scene that bugged me the hell out of me was whenThere is not a lot of depth in this film, only the depth that its followers make it out to be. Some like it more on a technical level. Some just like it because it is partly depressing. There are a lot of depressing films out their that equally, if not better, illustrate a village or city in the slums and are in need of a hope. Stalker did it just as good, maybe not better though. Although it was slow-paced, it never felt boring or had a lack of substance. Satantango does not fit that bill for me, and if I had to give it a rating it would be a five out of ten.

Gloomy mood? Rainy day? Nothing to do?This might be the movie to watch

Unfocused and shallow. It does have moments of brilliance. I particulary liked the doctors walk and when we see events from a different perspective. If Bela Tarr had more cinematic quality it could have been better but a lot seemed badly planned and half arsed. His love for shots where people walks till they are just a tiny black spot is just plain weak. The technique can work for endings or if they have some sort of importance but here it was just a nuicance. We saw next to nothing of the characters and I suppose they didn't matter too much. Most of the dialog was just really uninteresting and a lot was just plain dumb. This is the second Tarr film I have seen. Liked Werckmeister Harmonies despite it's shortcomings, this was just decent, close to being really poor at times. I give it 5/10. Not sure why this gets respect.boulderman
I finished this 18 months and a week after starting it. ... It's very good. Had a French auteur feel. The first hour is the best, if you like that, continue!SpacePauls
50 percent of the movie is people walking.Biki

If one chooses to watch this film in pieces, it'd probably be best if they watch the previous scene before continuing.Mr Hulot
Amazing film. I'm surprised it isn't on more lists.Imps
its fantastic. if you give it an open chance, preferably with a good picture and sound.. it's one of the most rewarding experiences existing on cinema.dAJaro

Building up to Satantango I watched two other works from Bela Tarr, Werckmeister Harmonies (2000) and The Turin Horse (2011). I am surprised that Satantango is by far the worst. Not to say this is a bad film, but everything Satantango accomplishes, Tarr's other films achieve better and in shorter time. I was expecting to be blown away by the cinematography, but this doesn't have the beautiful contrast grading of The Turin Horse or the interesting environments of Werckmeister Harmonies. The Bergman-esque magic present in all these movies is one of my favorite aspects, but Satantango includes this in so few of its scenes. Especially disappointing when you look at the overblown runtime. This film's structure is quite interesting, reflecting the forward/backward steps of a tango. The payoff, the closing of the circle did not seem worth the meandering though.Showing items 16 – 30 of 47
