The ostensible "junk shop" of the film's usual English title is actually a sběrna surovin (literally, "raw materials collection center"), where people would bring old newspapers, scrap iron, and other reusable stuff to be salvaged. This was basically an early recycling initiative by the socialist authorities of the ČSSR, though it had more to do with material shortages than environmental principles.
Sběrné suroviny ("collected raw materials") was the name often used (on signs, in common speech, etc.) for such places.

Herz' directorial debut Sberne Surovosti/The Junk Shop (1965) was originaly meant as part of the famous Czech New Wave manifesto Pearls of the Deep. In his interview with Košuličová, Herz states that The Junk Shop, the longest of the films directed for Pearls, was removed from the final theatrical version to shorten its running time.
