You should only watch this movie if you've seen the Firefly series imo. Watched it as a stand alone first and didn't get to me at all, later I saw it again (after Firefly) and it was worth so much more.
Joss Whedon does his best to craft a conclusive ending for a TV show that really needed 3 more seasons to achieve its full potential. But, even he isn't that much of a wizard, and the movie is just a shadow of what might have been.
The film sequel to the aborted tv series Firefly. All told, a pretty satisfying follow-up and finale to the tale begun three years earlier with epic happenings and cool revelations that would normally have happened at the end of Season 2. It's hard to judge a movie like this that essentially "finishes" a tv series. Was it comprehensible to audiences that hadn't seen Firefly? I think it works, though it does push you into the deep end. Perhaps it's best compared to similar sequels to television series, like the Star Trek movies. If I do, then I have to say that it was better than most Star Trek movies, the Wild Bunch vibe making everything a lot more suspenseful than open-ended franchises tend to produce.
I agree with MTwiko. This is more of a wrap up of a TV show than an independent feature. Weldon is like the opposite of Lynch. Lynch's brilliance shown through on Twin Peaks but he was clearly being hampered by the need to have so many characters and the pressure of the network and the TV format in general. On the other hand anyone whose seen Buffy knows Weldon's strength is in building characters and letting them grow, not cinematographic poetry. Everything felt rushed here. Good for closure on the series, but that's it.
Hell I enjoyed it. Fitting conclusion to a entertaining and different sci-fi series. Agreed another series of Firefly would of sealed off most of the loose ends but the film gives us a good amount of closure.
I hadn't seen "Firefly" before watching Serenity, and I loved it. Maybe I would have appreciated it more if I'd seen the show, but in my opinion Serenity stands perfectly well on its own.
Not sure why so many people are bashing it on here. Sure, it's not perfect, but Serenity is nonetheless a Well Written, Witty, Smart and Likeable Sci-Fi adventure.
Been a long time since I've seen the full series but this feature length film had no trouble in putting me right back in the thick of it. Interestingly enough, you can almost see some of the hints and tones that Whedon would eventually recycle later on when being a Marvel showrunner. I very much enjoyed the series and liked this as well. A film is the best a fan could've hoped for other than a Season 2 so, there's that.

Great Start. Good Ending. Dragged a lot in the middle. I should maybe have seen the TV show first.Showing items 1 – 15 of 33
