Extremely well made and utterly compelling IRA thriller - it positively buzzes with tension from the first scene to the last and pleasingly doesn't necessarily answer questions with neat narrative explanations - it's psychologically much more interesting and gripping as a result - especially thanks to the strong central performance by Andrea Riseborough (a native Geordie pulling off a flawless Belfast accent) who proves to be entirely capable of protecting herself and her family. Clive Owen is better cast than usual as Mac - a British agent not kept in the loop and increasingly struggling to stay in control of the situation he has put his informer in. James Marsh's direction is excellent as usual, and evokes a genuine world, full of danger, betrayal and sacrifice. Highly recommended. 11 years 7 months ago
