Swing and a miss from Bettany, which is a real shame because he clearly believes this movie has an important message to send and he gets great performances out of his wife Jennifer Connelly and Andrew Mackie. The film's problem lies in the screenplay, which wastes no time in descending into the territory of hopeless melodrama bordering on misery porn that serves merely as an excuse to put Connelly in the most degrading and contrived situations possible with little real insight into what it's like to be homeless. The characters don't feel real enough (indeed the revelation about Tahir's background is downright laughable) for this to be overly impactful, and at any rate after a while the overwrought and cliched scenes of addiction and human cruelty just become a bit numbing.
If there's a positive here (besides the performances) it's Bettany's direction, which shows promise despite being a little rough around the edges. But he should tackle someone else's script next time. 8 years 5 months ago
