Absolutely the best graphic novel to film conversion I've ever seen. It's so true to the novel it's almost unbelievable. The extended versions are even more like the novel and broken up like the novels. The theatrical cut is pretty good but is more like a non-linear loosely connected movie. It's hard to consider style and substance because the art and stories are taken verbatim from the novel to film.

A unique film with a style all its own. I loved the dark portrayal of the city and its inhabitants. The story of Marv is the best of the three with its exciting fighting scenes and character development.

A new and strange way of making a movie, but I think it was a bit overrated.
A perfect movie for too many beers and to little sleep. Maybe I should have read the comics...
A lot of action and blood and beautiful women, which is good. Too dark to see details, which is not so good.

It looks beautiful. I can't remember the last time I saw cinematography as innovative as this. It's like they've literally transplanted the feel of a comic book onto the screen.

And it's the style that elevates it from good comic book movie to really very good comic book movie. Cracking stuff

I think the way they filmed the movie was really cool. It made it feel like a graphic novel. The acting was pretty good in it. I like how it started with one story and moved into different stories, which were tied all together at the end.

While I'd enjoyed it in theaters, it had also given me a sense of déjà vu. And it started the sad trend of recreating comics frame-for-frame for the silver screen. Listen up, movie makers: When I go see a screen adaptation of a written work, I want to see YOUR interpretation, not the same thing I've ALREADY seen. Now that 2006 is far behind and I'd even forgotten the details of the comics, I can better enjoy the film, and the criticism I lay at 300 and Watchmen's feet isn't as important here because 1) Frank Miller actually (co-)directed the film and 2) I think it's a lot better than those other movies.

I had seen this movie when I was much younger, and didn't think much of it, but I watched it again today in anticipation for the second and I was gladly pleased. This is a fun movie, with amazing visuals and good performances. The style is mind-blowing, it made me want to see more and more. Very fun to watch.

Those pining over a lack of relatable protagonists are missing the point, and if you're expecting any audience empathy you are sorely mistaken. Consequently this is not a movie for everyone.
