A definite favorite for me. This movie showed me the many facets of the home front during World War II. It moved me with sweetness, humor, tragedy, love, and hope. The film’s theme echoed through every scene. I loved how the camera passed people in crowd scenes, it paused briefly to give ear to their individual lives as they spoke.

And it was all so real. In this movie, there isn’t that and-it-all-worked-out feel. People miss trains, romances cannot be fulfilled, triumphs are small and unglorified, loss is real, and expectations are not always fulfilled so grandly. The relationships are unique, not cliché, and very much like what you’d find in real life.

Tears have never felt so wonderful when you are filled with inspiration and hope.

I know I may sound like the Fun Police, but my god, is this impossible to watch with modern eyes. It's pretty rare that I switch off a film halfway, especially an old one. But I found this a real struggle to watch again (last seen two or three decades ago). Poor Claudette constantly denigrating herself, arrogant and very creepy Joe, Hattie made to look a right idiot, kindness equalling 'communism', a cringey portrayal of a girl who doesn't speak and is afraid of people and so much offensive dialogue. As a lifelong old film lover, I can often overlook this sort of thing, but I just found this one infuriating and couldn't sit all the way through. A pity. 1 year 4 months ago
