Aside from the millions, what was the point of this trilogy? Why are they called Episodes VII, VIII and IX? What do they have to do with the rise and fall of the Empire and the fall and redemption of Anakin? You know! Lucas' original vision. I'm not a fan of the prequels but at least you can say what they were about and how they connected with the first movies. These new ones are a mess: The Force Awakens was a safe remake; The Last Jedi was afraid of going hard with its new ideas and didn't set up anything concrete; and The Rise of Skywalker is just damage control that clumsily tries to cram a story worthy of multiple movies into 2 hours and a half of fanboyism.
Just let it die.

Remember those people who tried to crowdfund a shitty fanwank-filled remake of The Last Jedi? Turns out J.J. just let them make Episode IX under his name instead.AndrewB
Lots of action and special effects but Disney will want to retcon this trilogy soon enough. They brought in the original Star Wars actors and wasted them in a story that makes no sense.SpacePauls
Jedis are always shocked to learn their family lineage. It's like watching a Maury Povich episode.Norf

Congrats, Twitter fanboys. You won.MordredMS
Let's be frank here, this film is mostly damage control. Considering how bad the previous two were, and how little was properly set up, there's very little that could have been done better. Abrams had but two choices in front of him: either sacrifice the setup from Ep VIII, or sacrifice the setup from Ep I through VII. He chose the former. It's a film that hasn't got one original idea in its whole organism, just about every scene and every situation here has been seen and done before in SW media: the first half feels like a Star Wars: Rebels episode, many scenes are direct "homages" to earlier films, many ideas come from old-Expanded Universe material (Palpatine from "Dark Empire" and Vitiate from "The Old Republic" come to mind). It often feels forced, manipulative, if not downright silly.
But then again... could we really expect anything better, without either rewriting the whole Sequel Trilogy or ignoring the entirety of the established lore? At the very least it's coherent (within itself, unlike TLJ) and cohesive (with the rest of the lore, unlike TLJ and TFA), entertaining, it tries to give its characters a bit of personality and arc, and contains a few emotional moments despite how "fanservicey" they feel.
So I dare call it the best of the Sequel Trilogy... though it's not saying much. It's painfully clear that there was no plan going in, Johnson and Abrams had two completely different visions and each tried to ignore & overwrite the other's. How can the end result be anything but a mess?
A tragic mess of a trilogy that, especially since Rogue One and The Mandalorian showed us that good can still come out of the new SW era, highlights how little need there was for this story to be told, how much its very existence is a forced corporate product only meant to milk the brand.

What a piece of shit movie. Rushed and terribly long-winded at the same time, without adding anything new.Just horrible.

I don't think that I have ever before said "Huh?" and "What?!" quite so many times while watching a film.Paravail

The hard-core fanboys won, but nobody, not even them, was satisfied with pile of crap.SpacedJ
Left Brain: This is fanfic bullshit. It doesn't even make sense. Why are they having a light-sabre fight if his plan is to keep her alive? How did this seat-of-the-pants-written mcguffin chase even make it to production? Is this worse than the prequels? I mean, that's a low bar, but "somehow Palpatine returned" is spoken out loud as exposition and EVERYONE JUST ACCEPTS THAT? Oh yeah, dark magics, I get it. That makes sense. GAH!Right Brain: Nooo Rey, don't go evil! Noooo!
Seriously, when Chewie got his medal, I said "oh fuck off" out loud, but felt emotional anyway. The medals are stupid, I've always hated the idea. And yet I felt something. And that's how Disney hacks your brain through nostalgia.

Zero point to the new trilogy except for it being a cash grab.To be honest I really wasn't bothered about watching this movie, due to episode VIII, but watch it I did.
It's immediately apparent that JJ is trying to perform damage control for the crappy last two movies. He clumsily tries to tie up all loose ends and make the trilogy make sense but in the end it fails miserably.
Rise of Skywalker has zero genuine content and the trilogy is a train wreck from start to finish.
I'm glad this trilogy has finally come to an end. I know it's asking a lot but hopefully this will be the last Star Wars movie.
