This is being added to the list of Hollywood mediocre and pandering to be easy for everyone film's that I didn't finish. At some point, there was no point in continuing. For recent movies, list currently contains Star Wars 7 (this), Rogue One, Fantastic Beasts, most recent Marvel films especially Doctor Strange. If I hadn't been dragged along or forced to watch all the other Star Wars films before this, I may have liked it more. It's a passable film.

This isn't the review of The Force Awakens you're looking for--I mean, it's not the review that's going to revolutionize critical thought on the long-awaited - and in some quarters, dreaded - Star Wars Episode VII. Like most who approached the film critically, I found it had problems similar to those of the prequels, namely that many of its plot elements were "this again?". What it DID have that the prequels didn't was new characters that I wanted to see again. Rey, Finn, Poe, BB8, even poor, tortured Kylo Ren, are all worthy of this new trilogy. Making us accept the changing of the guard at all is a triumph, and I find each of these characters just enough of a remix of the original films' ensemble to keep things too derivative. This is also the funniest Star Wars film ever in terms of banter, but which still manages to throw some effective emotional punches, whether they be letting us share in the excitement the actors and characters are feeling (Light Side), or letting dramatic moments play out without dialog as pure cinema (Dark Side). Fleeting irritation at plot holes and elements copied not remixed from the originals, but otherwise, a solid entertainment. Fun above all. That puts it on par with Return of the Jedi, sharing the 2nd position in my personal ranking.KuroSawWhat
I have a bad feeling about this...danisanna
the series was as good as it gets but not going to lie, I did enjoy this one too.Dawizz
Same gr@p I've seen before. This most be a reboot of some sort, too familiar to be calling it a "new" movie. You know your project is gr@p wen the best part of it is a prop (BB8)...Faterou

So hard for me to write this without spoilers but here goes nothing. Episode VII is at its heart a re-hash of A New Hope in more ways than I care to count. Some of the similarities are done in a cameo-like fashion and others are so blatantly obvious that they nearly make you sit back and think "seriously JJ? I've seen this all before." Kylo Ren was the weakest part for me. Poorly acted in my opinion and absolutely positively shouldn't have taken off his mask until at least the next movie. When he does it you can literally feel the oxygen drain from the lungs of the movie. He's nothing more than a Darth Vader wannabe (which I realize he's kinda supposed to be, but I mean come on.) Captain Phasma was another disappointment, there was zero point to her being in the movie other than to set up for the sequel. Overall, JJ played it safe and ripped off a ton from A New Hope and personally I would have preferred something fresh. After a second viewing, it occurs to me how much they tried to cram into this episode. To be honest I think they jumped way too far into the future from Episode 6 and because of that there is too much to catch up on. Make Episode 7 about all the past plot points the characters spoke about in the movie and make this movie Episode 8 and I think it works much better. There's just too much to take in the way it is now. Hoping Episode 8 is more relaxed and with the game plan.
I will say that the ending sequence of the movie was amazing. Goosebumps all over.
There are other missteps, like Finn boasting that he can help take down Starkiller Base but nobody actually bothering to ask what he did there (after all, gotta work that "janitor" joke in, even if it is at the expense of a believable story.) Then, Finn admits to Solo that he doesn't care at all about the resistance or even the fate of the universe for that matter, he's only there to save Rey. This incredible statement by Finn is treated as nothing more than a throwaway gag. Come on, JJ.

I was skeptical about this movie, yet I wanted to live the whole Corporate Hype Experience and made this the first time I watched a 3D/4DX movie. And it was worth the ridiculously high-priced ticket, mostly because technology is God as well as the movie itself was fairly entertaining. I wasn't bored a single second. I enjoyed the fan service even though never gave too much of a fuck for the franchise. The CGI extravaganza was beautiful, it encourages you to forget about the childish story and just enjoy it.It does make me sad though that not anybody could experience cool shit like this because all your life might be consumed having to pay housing, food, health, education, children... For the sake of survival, sometimes we miss those silly things that make life something lovely.

Essentially of remake of A New Hope with some Empire and Jedi thrown in, but highly enjoyable. Now that the "fan service" movie is out of the way, I am excited to see where the next two films go with the story.Pete Concrete
Star Wars Episode VII: Best of 1977-1983The most expensive fan film ever made, albeit not the best.
At least Lucas had the guts to try something new with the prequel trilogy. I hope VIII and IX will be better.

94% RT...sounds like another one of Abrams overrated dogshit movies.MrDoog
I keep reading everywhere that "fans will love it" and after watching it tonight, i'm a little baffled because I don't think anyone could love this. A mishmash of the original 3 films but without the magic, it seems that Disney played this one safe and they'll probably earn $3billion as a result. It is "good", but without managing to capture that magical essence of the OT. It won't leave a sour taste like the prequels did.
But love? nope, not even close
