   Honestly, I was very surprised to learn that Strange World received such poor reviews and bombed so dreadfully at the box office. To me, this was an incredibly fun adventure romp, with characters I could relate to and care about, and the spectacularly gorgeous world they inhabit was a visual feast for every minute of the film. Many reviewers called the story unoriginal and underdeveloped, and there were certainly things I wish the film had explored in greater depth, but I still think the writers did a great job portraying the way values and perspectives have shifted in the past several generations, handling the theme of father–son relationships in a way that didn't feel too stale and hackneyed (though I did groan when I realised this would be a central part of the plot), and working in an ecological subtext that was actually nuanced and moving rather than straightforwardly on-the-nose. I'm not sure what people were expecting, but this is a 21st century Disney movie, and it was far more inventive, forward-thinking, and well-structured than many Marvel films that have received much better reviews.
   
   If anything, I just wish this had been a hit so there could be the possibility of a Strange World–themed play area at Disneylands in the future. I feel like the environment of this film has so much untapped, interactive, positively bouncy potential. 11 months 1 week ago

   There's bits and bobs from everything there and there's something endearing about the whole thing but the script feels like patchwork of drafts and "homages" with no real drive beyond... making a movie I guess.
   Beyond its rather hamfisted message, there's not much point to the whole adventure and it's not nearly as entertaining as it could have been. 11 months ago

   While all the pieces were fine, there was just something in the way everything came together that made this more of chore to watch. I can't point to any one thing that broke it for me, but can't imagine I'd every watch it again. 11 months 1 week ago
