I get chills every time the ominous organ music begins over the opening credits. A tour-de-force from all involved making this one of my favourite films of 2007. A highly recommended bloody good time of a musical.

Loved this movie. I get told I'm wrong whenever I say this, but I think Johnny Depp did well in his role.

The musical puts two things at odds: My appreciation for Sondheim, and my intense dislike of the latter-day Tim Burton/Johnny Depp team. The result is that my expectations were met. Fell right in the middle. I neither loved it, nor hated it. I am resolutely ambivalent about it. I kept getting distracted by how all the actors worked together either in the Harry Potter films or Les Miserables (many of the plot elements are similar to the latter, you must agree), and I've never found either Depp or the equally Burton-ubiquitous Bonham-Carter engaging as singers, certainly not slurring their way through Cockney renditions of the songs (as correct as that might be). And while I'm always up for some Alan Rickman, I don't fancy him a great singing talent either. I works thanks to its outrageous story of love, slaughter, cannibalism and mistaken identities, a truly Shakespearean blend, but just okay for me.

I feeeeeeeeeeeeeel you Johannnnnna.

This is dark and very very twisted. I mean this seriously is the definition of dark Tim Burton. Definitely encourage his fans to see this.

Depp is magnificent as always.

I love how Depp brings a "rock" quality to his singing. It is refreshing and not overly dramatic. Sinister enough with a deadly charm. Helena was too breathy but taking into account that she is not a professional singer by all means, she has done well to sing one of the most difficult piece in the musical. I take my hat off to Sondheim for such lovely music. It's a pleasure to watch this movie over and over again and just enjoy the beautiful imagery and lovely music. Peppered with humour amid the dark atmosphere, Sweeney Todd succeeds not so much for its plot (it's adapted and honestly, to judge the film for its plot is totally missing the point) but rather its execution.

My attachment to the source material might affect my judgment a bit, but this is easily one of the two or three best things Burton has ever done. It's not an entirely successful adaptation - the staging of "A Little Priest," one of the best act one finales in musical theater history, falls completely flat, and the Anthony and Johanna storyline is truncated to the point of meaninglessness - but it's still very good. The non-professional singers do a good job bringing emotion to Sondheim's extraordinary music and lyrics, and, overall, the film maintains much of the emotional power of the stage production - which is still one of the greatest works of musical theater (though not quite among the best of Sondheim's shows.)
