The fantasy element of this film was quite acceptable however they tried to use a realistic premise as the back story so for me this fell totally on its face. Superficially enjoyable with all the hipster emo but I found myself disliking it for the most part. The end only made it worse as both worlds collided into a giant pile of marbled poop. 1/5.
Funny, but moving. Emotional, yet staid. Swiss Army Man is neither a life-changing experience nor a particularly poignant one, but I'll be damned if it's not very well acted, well edited, and the most original premise you'll see at the theatres this year.
Just watched this last night and I don't remember the last time I laughed so hard. The absurdity is through the roof. At the same time, though, it's a great look at mental health as it gives you a great view of the film through Paul Dano's character's perspective. A wild ride for sure.
This movie is definitely funny, crass, and absurd. I think that's all most people got out of it. But looking past that, it's also one of the most profound and provocative meditations I've ever seen about the struggle of the individual vs the rules of society. It absolutely blew my mind, but that message is only going to be there if you're ready to hear it.
Definitely notable in that it's the only movie I've ever seen that made me spit out my popcorn in the theater laughing, and it's impressive that the same film also left me in tears. This is art, plain and simple, too fresh and subversive to be seen on its own merits in its own time.
Huh, I still can't decide wether I've liked the film or not - but I'm 100% sure that I'll remember it for a while. It helped a lot that I did not see it alone - you can still think about the surreal road to madness alone but having company helps to enjoy the funny parts. I myself always hated fart jokes btw.
This movie is funnier than I had expected. The movie embraces the absurdity of Daniel Radcliffe's "character" and runs with it. His uses are innumerable and, like a good multi-tool, available when you need them.
Swiss Army Man is an absurdist film about a mentally disturbed man falling in love with an all-purpose, farting corpse (Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe respectively), drawing from both absurdist fiction and magical realism, at once scatological and existential, Castaway meets Weekend at Bernie's, with more than a touch of Be Kind Rewind... And it's kind of a musical too. At the very least, my recommendation should lead you to something you've never seen before. Through a game of contrasts between the crass and the beautiful, the film offers a meditation on the things we do not value - garbage, bodily functions, people - and asks... why not? Dano's character learns to celebrate life by connecting to a dead stranger - with which he identifies - only now learning what it might mean to be alive, especially in the ways we take for granted. The filmmakers call it a "fart drama", and you won't understand what that means until you see it.
The most surprising film I have seen in a long time. Who knew that a fart joke can actually sustain the entire run time of a feature length film and make you feel so many emotions. Going in, I skimmed a few reviews and felt that they were overplaying the emotional elements of the film and that about ten minutes the fart joke would be overplayed. Nope. This a briskly paced, well composed, greatly acted and masterfully directed piece of cinema. Perhaps due to the over-reliance on twists in modern cinema but I was anticipating no fewer than three different twists and was so happy (well...sad) when it ended as it did. It never overstayed its welcome and manages to be heart-warmingly funny through the very end.
