I was always a fan of Sarah Polley as an actress, but Take This Waltz makes me a fan of her writing and direction as well. This is easily one of my favorite films I've seen this year. Michelle Williams plays a listless married woman, Margot, who considers cheating on her rather immature husband (Seth Rogen) with a free spirit who recently moved across the street (Luke Kirby). A simple story, but one that transcends its premise, each scene well-observed and poetically shot. Polley's Toronto is summery in a way that is quite unusual for Canadian cinema, just gorgeous, and there's a bit of a squee moment for this Atlantic Canadian when the film starts out at Louisbourg. There's an ambiguity to the film that makes you wonder if certain scenes are actually happening as presented (or at all), or if they're part of Margot's imagination, but I think both interpretations flow into one another, both possible and neither completely true. This may help mitigate some of the criticism that this film somehow glorifies adultery (it SO doesn't, thanks for missing the point), because it may not even be happening. What it does is make each of its characters sympathetic and real - the childish silliness in Williams and Rogen's marriage feels particularly true and un-Hollywoodian - flaws and all.

A great film about a relationship ending. You may also enjoy Blue Valentine if you liked this...

It's real and the characters are real and like all real things this movie also had flaws. But it's worth a watch.

Pretty disappointing. I was looking forward to this, but it was just alright.

Sarah Polley's second film as director after the great "Away from Her" is a challenging and not altogether likeable film studying the collapse of a happy marriage. It annoyed me intensely and is still rumbling around in my head 24 hours later - it's expertly made and wonderfully acted and pushes uncomfortable buttons if you've been through a messy break up. In fact, how you feel about Michelle William's Margo will depend on your own experiences of adultery or infidelity, not just if you are a man or a woman, which can often be the dividing line in a film about relationships. The characters are impressively three dimensional, deeply flawed and human, although the situation derives from a horribly contrived opening coincidence. Another issue I had was the lack of chemistry between Williams and Kirby which weakens the balance of the film, especially when Williams and Rogen light up the screen with their funny and often embarrassingly true childish playfullness and baby talk. Spoilers ahead: spoiler It's thanks to Williams brilliant performance that we care about her dilemma in the face of her selfishness and appalling decisions. It will polarize opinion unlike any other recent film, it's definitely not a good date movie unless you like an argument with your popcorn, and I don't think it entirely works - but it definitely got under my skin.

Despite the horrible and unneccesary ending, the Video Killed the Radio Star scene was one of the best this year.

Horrible movie, please don´t compare this with Blue Valentine, Blue Valentine is so much better that this movie.
The plot is stupid the characters are stupid, the movie has scenes that are dissapointing. What is Seth Rogen doing in this movie? Please Seth stay with the comedy.
I´m gonna to be honest, the only things that i like in the movie, was Michelle and Sarah Silverman naked in the shower, and the Video Killed the Radio Star scene, and that´s it.
