Is it better than the best silent movies have to offer? No, certainly not. But we only tend to remember the very best of something nearly 100 years old. They churned the things out in those days, and I'd venture to say The Artist is better than most of them. As an homage/tribute to the era, it hits many of the right buttons.
AMAZING MOVIE ! I cannot believe it took me that long to watch it ! Perfect !! cried, laughed and everything, love it, love it, love it !!!! Great actors ! Even the dog !!! <3
I really enjoyed this movie. Sure, the plot is not the big deal and it is predictable, but that doesn't mean that this movie isn't good. What is not point of discussion here is the Jean Dujardin's performance. He did a great job and definitely deserved the Oscar.
Unable to match the grandeur of legitimate silent films from the era it is mimicking, The Artist seemed stale and forced to me. They spent so much time imitating the silent classics, that it didn't seem to have anything original to present. I had the same issue with "Super 8," which seemed to consist of 95% cutting room scraps from Spielberg classics. Imitation isn't enough. Props for the effort, but I wouldn't sit through it again. I'd rather watch the inspirations of the film. If nothing else, hopefully this will have encouraged people to look up the early parts of cinema history and discover the origins of everything we have now in film. ... A few people, at least. ... Maybe.

The type of movie that you see six months after award season/the Oscars and you think "Gee, what was all the fuss about?"Anna Choukaer

Late reply@ericaf: I'm saying "silent" isn't a genre. Just like "colour" and "widescreen" aren't genres.
