I'd love to have a copy of that book. The artwork in the pop-up was really cool.

More than anything else, for me personally, the underlying context of the film is about parenting--particularly coping with raising a child with special needs.

I guess this is a love it or hate it movie. I had heard amazing things from reviews but wasn't expecting much. The movie itself is pretty basic but it is so very well made. I loved this film. I found it one of the best scary movies I've seen in a long time. I still can not get my head around all of it. The ending, the ending. All around WTF

Well, I can now certainly see what all the fuss was (and still is, I guess) about. Did not expect it to be this allegorical. Spotted just the slightest of Kubrickian and Lynchian influences here and there, but refreshingly from a female perspective that added some much needed warmth and depth to the film. Very skillfully done. A modern classic indeed.

I was very excited to see this movie when it came out. A modern horror flick with an original plot, which doesn't rely on jump-scares? Sign me up!

The result, however, left much to be desired. You're introduced to a mother and a child whose relationship is rocky, due to the child's behavioral issues. The child is infuriating in every scene, which I'm sure was the intention of the director, but it makes the film hard to watch.

Many positive reviews of the film state that the Babadook isn't real, and is just a metaphor for the widowed mother's attempt to cope with raising a horrible child without the father. This explanation doesn't explain away the unnecessary animal cruelty scene, which is arguably the worst part of the film.

Furthermore, without getting into spoilers, I felt like the movie had an opportunity to resolve a bunch of issues set up earlier in the film, and instead went out of its way to leave them unresolved, leaving the audience with a dark cloud over its head as the credits begin to roll.

It's a dreadful film with very few redeeming qualities.

Heard nothing but good things and had been looking forward to this for a while, sadly though I thought this was downright awful. The idea is very interesting but unfortunately the movie does little more than make me think this idea would have been more effective in a short film. First off this thing looked low budget throughout, the acting on both our leads I thought was laughably bad and I did in fact laugh more than a handful of times. The other big gripe I have with this movie is the pacing, I felt the set up dragged a bit, the middle was rushed, and the end subsequently felt entirely too long and the very end had me rolling my eyes to no end. One last gripe is these characters never feel like anything more than personified grief. There's no substance to them beyond their emotional problems and it doesn't make them likable or relate-able so when shit hits the fan and the obvious connection of what the Babadook is supposed to represent starts to smack you in the face even more it just bored me, and the sound design of the babadook was really cheap and boring. Terrible execution of a good idea.

Finally the true and haunting atmosphere of a horror movie, so difficult to find that.

This felt very Lynchian in terms of lots of visceral things happening below the surface that you want to explain even though you can't adequately do so. And that's okay. Also Lynchian that characters and their changes are never completely explained, ah well.
The ending lessened the impact though, seemed to be trying to wrap it up in some kind of tidy way (a horror tidiness, I guess) that took me out of the emotional place it had taken me to up to then.

It already works as a very creepy, well crafted horror - but the depth and metaphorical nature raises it to an excellent film.

I'm not sure I saw the same film as the people who have commented here...
The child's acting wasn't great, I've seen better in British Soaps and that is saying something.
There is an air of unease throughout the film but for me it missed the mark.
