I was struck at how affecting this "reverse-Ferris Bueler" actually was. John Hughes really pegs the teenage psychology down, sometimes having them deal with major problems, but also making huge melodramatic meals out of minor ones. Point is, it's major to the characters, which is dead on. Damn you for making me teary, Anthony Michael Hall! I don't like the Hollywood-ish feel of the ending, but otherwise, great intensity, humor and mmm, emo Ally Sheedy.

Loved how the plot evolved, quite slowly, but naturally, and especially how the characters' relationship turned out eventually. As a teenager, the fact that I could easily relate to the characters and mostly to the way they felt and perceived everything around them boosted the film highly on my list of faves.
Also, I can't help but point out what a babe Judd Nelson was back then!

This is a no-age movie. You can see it whenever you want, the year you are living in and the movie have the same sense. Refreshing, funny and real.

Should I watch this for the comedy or the portrayal of youth? It was too cliched to be either.. As cmm1285 said: "Only a slight step-up from Mannequin."

It’s an iconic movie. Cute, funny and it does have a memorable concept.
If the 80’s can be summed up in one movie … this would be it.
On the other hand, it’s not a movie I could watch time and again. Once is enough.

I am a huge movie fan and love 80's cinema but I just viewed the film recently. Its a wonderful film full of unique loveable characters and a wide range of emotions. A great John Hughes coming of age movie, but personally I still like Ferris Butler's Day Off more.

Everyone is the most cliche caricature and what's worse is the film wants you to know it and basks in it.

To respond to this I'm simply going to quote the film:

This is a good film. The nerd wasn't a very good character and the bad boy had the most cliché back story ever. Another problem is that they made Bender an asshole, solely, to advance the plot.
Still, outside from that, the dialogue was good and I felt it touched some interesting subjects concerning teenagers in a manner that felt natural unlike most films about teenagers, which usually feel forced and unrealistic. We all know most teenagers are never this brutally honest with themselves and others, so this was quite impressive for me.
It definitely has some flaws but it also has some strengths and I would recommend that you watch it. 7/10.

This hits every every 80s and teen film cliché ever. Incredibly trite, at least when watched by a grown-up.

One of those classic play-in-the-middle-of-a-weekday-on-a-network-channel types of movies. Only a slight step-up from Mannequin.
