DJPowWow
I spent the whole time thinking Fredric March's accent for Jean Lafitte sounded almost exactly like Inigo Montoya from "The Princess Bride". At the same time, Franciska Gaal sounded like Lili Von Shtupp from "Blazing Saddles". I wonder if either Mandy Patinkin or Madeline Kahn ever saw this film...
Anyway, I had expected a sweeping pirate movie, with battles at sea, etc., but instead got a semi-historical war film about the War of 1812 and the Battle of New Orleans, with most of the action happening on land. Despite this, though, it was overall fairly fast-paced (relative to other films of that era) and pretty funny. Was pleasantly surprised to see Walter Brennan in a small role as Andrew Jackson's sidekick, and Akim Tamiroff seemed to steal every scene he was in as Lafitte's own sidekick/cannoneer. 11 years 11 months ago
