Definitely not what I expected- but I definitely enjoyed it. Takes the typical "teens in the woods" scenario... and throws it out the window. Worth a watch. Even if you find yourself predicting some of the plot points along the way, there's no way you'll guess everything.

Like the satire of this one -- the irony is perfect when you realize spoiler and that the movie is about what spoiler

Mix of different genres inside what still is a horror movie. Really original, left me feeling like I saw something new, which is always a good thing.

*SPOILERS*
It could have so easily been about gambling and entertainment (similar to the entertainment value of watching gladiators die) which would have explored the evil and greedy nature of humanity, instead they use the "sacrifice for elder gods" premise, giving the people underground an excuse to carry out the tasks and turning this great idea into a boring and ridiculous mess. The very end was also extremely lazy and forgettable.

Good Idea, bad execution.

This was one of those very rare occasions when all my friends and I leave the cinema agreeing it was a good movie.
It's difficult to review without giving too much away, but suffice to say it's an original take on a very familiar type of movie with rehashed characters that's been to done to death over and over again to the point of ad nauseam.

This movie's greatest strength lies in the fact that unlike so many other movies with a similar storyline it has no delusions of grandeur. It constantly pokes fun at itself and doesn't take itself too seriously. It embraces it's own ridiculousness, the over the top gore and the deliberate cliches etc.

Probably my favourite horror since the first Saw and I'm by no means a fan of horror movies but this one is good fun, would definitely recommend it.

Very fun movie, especially for horror film fans, with an ingenious concept, and good follow-through on all its ideas, though a few too many contrivances let it down for me spoiler

I thought it was great. I love how over the top and far fetched the premise is. If you don't like this kind of stuff, you might hate it, but to me it never gets too over the top. Although, the more I think about it the more the whole idea behind the film seems less and less logical, but it is still an extremely fun and eganging movie.
Also, I loved the satire of the japanese horror films.

Can't believe this movie got so much praise????? Yes, it gives a fresh twist to a basic horror premise but it's seriously lacking in thrills or excitement with a terrible overblown ending. How and what excectaly was Sigourney Weaver doing in this movie.

No, not for me......

The comments seem to range from blistering hatred to glorious praise all over the internet, these comments included. Funny how some things get under peoples skins to such a degree.

Even though I consider Joss Whedon to be terribly overrated, possibly stemming from my disgust with Buffy/Angel/Firefly/etc... I loved The Cabin in the Woods!

Highly recommended, especially to horror and sci-fi fans.

Hmm. Maybe too tongue in cheek to be truly clever, or horrific for that matter. Even small scares are lost completely due to the viewer's unlimited omnipotence. Doesn't do self aware as well as its predecessors.

What I will do is recommend you watch it for a fun meta experience.

What I wont do is use the comments as a personal blog to name drop.

Anyone that calls themselves a horror fan is going to get one hell of a kick out of this movie. It does a great job of simultaneously embracing and critiquing the genre conventions.

If you thought Scream was meta, let me introduce you to The Cabin in the Woods. A product of Buffy writers Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's imaginations, Cabin is as much commentary on horror films and why we like them, as it is a tribute to the great movie monsters in horror film history. It's SF that turns to horror then back to SF and again to horror as you delve deeper into its world. A genre-bender that can, if you let it, change many horror movies you've seen or have yet to see. And it's funny, in the same way Buffy was, coming from a place of character and Whedon's approach to the unexpected. Very fun.

Haha wow, hadn't thought about it that way.

And this movie is awesome, very 'meta' and a nice parody on the horror genre. And common, that 'coffee mug bong' must be the most awesome ever :D
