William Wyler's decision to cast Samantha Eggar (rather than Julie Christie) as he knew Eggar had rejected Terence Stamp in real life, may just be the best casting decision of the 1960's.

A late, sinister piece of brilliance from Wyler. The horror and despair creeps up on you, concealed beneath the beautifully shot rustic surroundings.
