Ever seen a movie that's so bland and unsurprising that watching the trailer gives you the exact same effect? That's this movie.

eddie redcarpet is in full blast looking to get his second oscar two years in a row (sorry but it's leo's year, fish lips). the subject matter is interesting but tom hooper, just like with everything else in his filmography, manages to make it soooo BORING and this obvious oscar bait is no exception. i literally just woke up after falling asleep for 4 hours during the second half of the movie. i wish i was kidding. it was a nice nap tho. good night everybody.

This needs a positive comment so I'm going to make it. It's beautifully filmed, with constantly gorgeous framing, deals with an interesting subject matter, and has great performances. I can recognise that it has flaws - mainly in the script - but the overall impact, for me, overrides those.

cringeworthy first half. the script is horrendous and gives the actors absolutely nothing to work with. that being said i think both eddie redmayne and alicia vikander give stunning performances. i agree with the oscar-bait comments and so wish lili elbe would have gotten the film that she deserved, but alas, the world is not a wish-granting factory. i don't think the movie is boring or poorly made, i just think it is absolutely irrelevant. which - considering the importance of its subject matter - is an achievement in and of itself.

The Danish Girl reveals the true story of the Wegeners, a couple of married painters who, in the early part of the 20th Century, struggled with the husband being transgender and falling into a dissociative state and creating a Lili persona who becomes the wife's model. It's directed by Oscar bait expert Tom Hooper (The King's Speech, Les Misérables) whose lens is extremely painterly - this is a gorgeous-looking film - and stars Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vinkander, both nominated for acting awards (absurdly, Vikander is in the supporting category despite having as large a role). Obviously, Redmayne had a challenging task here, but having seen him in three recent films now, I've already spotted all his ticks and does little new for me despite the transformational nature of the role. Vikander is the one to watch and has the stronger, and more subtle character. In fact, despite the film being in part based on "Lili"'s journals, the script makes Redmayne's character single-minded almost to the point of cartoonishness, and maybe it's because journal entries have been put straight into his mouth, but the dialog he has to deliver feels over-written and cheesy. Not so the character of Gerda Wegener, whose UNDER-writtenness is basically Vikander-proof. It's all on her face if not on the page.

Redmayne's character is more one-dimensional than Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. While this is an important true-world story, it falls well short in complexity as a translation into film.

Not as flawless as many have made it out to be. The script was basic and didn't have any intriguing aspects to it. The transformation felt too quick, I wish there was a better build up

Wonderful performances by Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander. Beautifully shot. Costumes and locations are great too. The last scenes are the best of the movie.
