Well directed and acted. But the writing was kind of silly, especially when compared to Batman Begins.

I'm not sure why this movie is on so many Top Lists and I now know why I did not see it when it came out. Of course I get the appeal for a lot of moviegoers. I'm just not one of them. I do, however, appreciate the special effects and the fact that this was Health Ledger's next to last film. Beyond that - not much.

Possibly the most overrated film of all time. Only Heath Ledger redeems it from being utterly terrible.

Nolan is impressive technically and Ledgers take on the Joker will always be considered legendary but it was far from perfect. 7/10

@mightysparks: even though I liked the film, I think you bring up a lot of good points.

I loved the despairing tone of this.....how the villain makes incredibly violent and sad things happen, then does other things to inconvenience and damage society. I see it as operatic in that regard. The ending lets us down - I almost expected it to end with another death.

This movie has so many layers. What depth! Every dialog. Every scene. Every character. Brilliantly written. Amazing movie. I have seen it 10-20 times already. I don't like summer blockbusters that much, but this movie is something else. Love it.

I've gotten slightly obsessed with this movie...I'm not usually a superhero fan but this blew me away, to be perfectly honest. Mostly because of Heath Ledger's performance though, I'm not sure I'd like it as much if they'd cast someone else as the Joker. It was just amazing to see him develop his character and his insanity in some of the scenes is pretty addictive to watch.

The Dark Knight is definitely one of the greatest superhero films ever made. The score, acting, directing and story were definite strengths in this film. Heath Ledger's roles as the Joker was phenomenal every time he was on screen and definitely earned his posthumous Oscar win!

This Nolan Batman makes the hero atmosphere more obscure, but at the same time tries to respect the comic guide.

In my opinion Christian Bale as Batman is sweet, same with Heath Ledger (RIP) as an Oscar Joker.

Key words: Clown gang thiefs, Joker, Two ferrys, Harvey Dent as Two Face, Hospital, movie #2.

I like this movie very much. But I still feel that this is one of the most overrated movies of the decade. And people are calling this as best superhero movie of the year when the only highpoint of the movie is that one actor who died after doing a really good job in the film and he is not even the hero or maybe he is.

I do agree that this is a very good crime/drama film and a fine one in that class but this isnt a superhero movie IMO just because it has batman in it. The plot was very simple with a lot of philosophical undertones which engulfed itself with its own sense of misplaced self-righteousness (and no I am not saying these to claim myself to be an intellectual, these are merely my opinions put in the terms of the movie's quotes and I am a very simple minded man and you can rip on me for that).

I do respect other's opinion but just dont care about people jumping on to defend the movie with empty arguments like 'this is an intellectual piece of art and cant be understood by simpletons'. I say to those people, 'Good for you for being one of the intellectuals on the planet and I am glad that there is a filmmaker who can quench your thirst for critical thinking'.

I just wanted a superhero movie, that's all.

why do pseudo-intellectual douchebags try to pass themselves off as intelligent movie critics by dumbing down the plot to make the film sound average. if you're going to put the dark knight up against any superhero movie, you're going to find that in all aspects, the dark knight surpasses it by a landslide! how does that make it bad? if it can be considered #1 in its category?

people often rely on movie conventions to criticize this film, often missing the essential point.
"bruce wayne was a dull, flat character."
bruce wayne, was not the primary focus, his relationship with characters were their to define the motive of his alter egos actions. his alter ego, being the primary focus as a character, symbolically. the dark knight was a symbol for the actions of all throughout the film, and the relationships were their to accompany the actions of the people in their final decisions.

"it's just another action blockbuster."
be that as it may, an 'action blockbuster' title should not do its part to discount the dark knight from its scaling on whether it is good or bad.
is 'usual supects' just another crime thriller?
is 'the good the bad and the ugly' just another western?
of course not, in their respected genres they're high calibre and create a well-told story with its own unique setting, character archs and tools. you can't ostracize and attack a movie just for the field it chooses to fight in, if it does it so well.

the dark knight is one of the best superhero films in recent memory, and whether it is overrated or not, is up to you to decide. that is merely on the scale of your own expectations. but saying the movie is bad, without actual reason, is indefensibly stupid. you don't have to like it, but you casting imaginary stones won't coax peoples original opinions or create this intellectual illusion that you so desire.

there's more criticisms that people have adressed that would take a lot of time and effort to get into, but i'll draw the line at where i have.

(this comment is aimed at some of the bad TDK reviews/comments that i've read on this site.)

I don't care about superheroes at all, so I avoided this movie as long as I could. But since I'm planning to check the entire Top 250, I eventually had to watch it.

As I expected, it's a rather bland story about a bunch of forgettable characters in funny costumes chasing each other. Nevertheless, the first hour was fairly entertaining, with some exciting action sequences and nice Hong Kong scenery. During the next hour, it started to drag more and more, and now, with only 40 minutes to go, I'm really tempted to call it quits and just put that little check mark in the upper right corner of this page, as I did with Inception.
