Absolutely gorgeous to look at, at times. The way von Sternberg uses mist... The docks are an imaginary realm of desire and violence. The barrel-chested Bancroft is the epitome of fetishized working-class masculinity. Kinda sweetly, stupidly romantic for all that.
Great movie, one of my favorite silents.
Fabulous cinematography. Really gorgeous to watch.
