Total Oscar bait. Excellent performances, a few pseudo-poetic lines of dialogue, themes of race/nationalism/what have you, soundtrack consisting entirely of piano, "based on a true story," British accents, and of course, Nazis. Not a bad movie, but it follows the formula far too closely to do anything interesting. It's like a really well made hamburger.

Long, boring, cliched, cheesy and melodramatic. Beat Fargo at the Oscars. I really like Fargo, so I´ll leave now.

Darkness_prevails

It certainly is a well made film. There are some beautiful moments and fine performances all around. The plot didn't strike me to be as powerful as the film would like to think it is. It is a bit too melodramatic and maybe a little long, but definitely worth checking out. It doesn't deserve some of the hate (or backlash) that it received after winning Best Picture.

This film is more beautiful than most people realise! Exceptionally shot, great performances and wonderful music to fall in love with. On an emotional level this is really out there!!

Just watched it, a bit too long and dated for 2021, I guess maybe 15 years ago I would have liked it better, but now different times. I believe it was even considered long in the 90s, more importantly it is very slow, nothing really fascinating happens, its just like a monologue with flashbacks.

A rich and labyrinthine romantic drama couched in the rising and setting days of WWII. Acting across the board is a superb delight and the film-making's density rivals that of its Ondaatjean counterpart. Certainly deserving of its oscars.
