Keatons physical talent for silent movie acting is truly unfolded to its greatest. In the amazing scenery of "The General" Great Stone Face show that he is the often underestimated king of silent comedy.
I've watch it uncountable times, and still can't stop laughing.
My favorite silent era comedy and one of the best comedies to this day.

The story is sweet and exciting - the stunts are amazing breathtaking and little jokes to break the tension throughout. It's a well constructed movie and worth watching.

This movie is wonderful! Shot beautifully, edited superbly, acted brilliantly, great score. Really funny and a great war film. In short a masterpiece. I really do hate the fact that modern movies get way too much credit when a lot of their older counterparts are generally better overall and deserve much more credit just because they age so much better. I haven't laughed and been awed (at the same time) by a movie in a long time, and it's silent!

I'm not really up on my Buster Keaton, so though it is often played as slapstick comedy, The General was much more of an action flick than I could have imagined. The connective tissue is a little dull, but the real reason to watch is the two incredible train chases, on real moving trains, as the "General" is first stolen from the South by Union forces during the American Civil War, the taking the return trip with Keaton's heroic engineer at the controls. Amazing stunt work. The final battle has huge production values as well, so don't stop watching. This was loosely based on a true incident, and that takes the sting out of the North being villainous and the War essentially being about saving Keaton's kidnapped girlfriend. The real issues behind the conflict have been completely whitewashed, if you know what I mean, so it really plays as a fantasy with a vague background. A setting for prat falls and awesome stunt work.

Great battle scene towards the end. The final shot was pretty amusing too.

I honestly can't see how anyone could find this movie boring. I was laughing throughout the movie and the fact that almost all of the train scenes were actually happening only added to my appreciation of the action sequences. The plotline was simple but very well executed. I can see why this is considered the number one movie of the silent era.
