Unfortunate Synopsis

Perhaps it should have been named "The Not Too Bad Gatsby." The movie is enjoyable if you just accept a few stylistic choices at face value:

1 -- yes, they have used modern-times music modified to sound slightly more time-appropriate;
2 -- yes, they do hammer the core symbolism a little too hard -- the green light, the optometrist sign, etc. and
3 -- the text on the screen was unnecessary -- we get that Carroway is the narrator

My positives are: they stayed fairly true to the book; the costume design is spectacular; Leo DiCaprio is always good (and this is no exception); and Tobey Maguire was surprisingly good.

Didn't like the soundtrack choice. Love Watch The Throne, but hearing tracks from it just felt really out of place.

All in all, I'd say it was The Okay Gatsby.

Not the popular vote, but I liked it. Including the music. Only bit I struggled with was Tobey Maguire's silly grin in the wrong places.

Obviously the story is great, but the visuals really annoyed me. Leo DiCaprio seemed a bit too old and Toby Maguire a bit too Toby Maguire.

I miss this kind of films only Luhrmann can bring to us. Shiny, Loudly and Eccentric. I was amused every second of it. Ensure the magic of the films.

Never seen another movie that embodied the "style over substance" issue better than this one. If nothing else It's very slick and will probably keep you watching right to the end. The modern music ruined many of the scenes for me personally, it was impossible to place myself in a roaring 20's party with Jay Z or will.I.am blasting in the background. Not a terrible movie but could have been much, much better.

Didn't like Tobey Maguire at all. They could have chosen someone... I don't know, better?
The soundtrack. Where do I start? I- won't. (Absolutely ridiculous)
Also I understand it's a movie but even for a movie it just seemed overly fake. Everything. Even the grass. Like, I get that is fake but it's not supposed to look fake.

Beautifully shot movie with great costuming and good acting. The music however didn't fit for most of the picture with a few exceptions. My eyes were glued to the screen right through, definitely got the visuals right.

The (Good) Gatsby, the visuals, sets and Costumes throughout the film were an excellent display of exuberant colouring and mise en scène. I can't help but see some of the corners were cut from the story and some of the characters could have been delved into a little more, however the film is already a whopping two hours and twenty three minutes long, so I feel it is a forgiveable offence by director Baz Luhrmann. I think this is the reason why people who read the book before watching the film disliked the on screen version, as its character development is unfinished and unpolished because of a lack in time made it hard to fit the whole story in a feature film.
And finally the soundtracks. The soundtrack did take me out of the flow of the film a few times, they felt very forced and did not fit almost at all into the world of Gatsby Baz Luhrmann was trying to create, I think this might have been a marketing decision to help the film appeal to a mass market rather than an actual artistic choice that would have been better for the film.
Overall the film was enjoyable, certainly more enjoyable than most big summer blockbusters and it kept the audiences and me interested throughout.
So not great, nowhere near bad, but a good cinema experience. (The Good Gatsby)

Playing hip-hop and electronic was a terrible idea, but the worst for me was that the characters were talking of how cool that jazz was LOL

Finally, I have seen this one, which I was already recommended in 2014 to see by a female colleague at Taxi Kurirs HQ! A movie I was almost afraid to see, because of all the ovations and my high expectations.

As is often the case with Baz Luhrman's productions, this is bombastically magnificent and visually a real gem! Add beautiful photo, nice editing / transitions, very good acting and directing as well as good music - Baz aaalways mixes different times with different music from other times (what's the fuzz, really?), it is his thing.

The best film adaptation of F. Scott's Fitzgerald's classic novel of the same name so far (however, I do not know how faithful the original film script is as I have not had time to read the book despite being in my possession).

Enjoyable and visually striking movie with great sets and an excellent cast.

Didn't like the music score though.
