You'd kind of expect a full blown propaganda machine with John Wayne at the helm but it wasn't nearly as gung-ho as I though it would be. There are strong themes of patriotism and pride but at the same time it can be cut back with the newsmans's characters simple views of "none of this carnage would be happening if America wasn't involved." Interesting that in '68 the war was still full swing so any judgment of the outcome of the war would have to wait till much later. 7 years ago -

This seems like one of those films like Triumph of the Will and Birth of a Nation where I'm supposed to despise it for moral reasons. But it's a John Wayne picture. If I hate this then I have to hate Back to Bataan, The Fighting Seabees, Operation Pacific, Action in the North Atlantic and all those other propaganda war films. It's as old-fashioned and corny and fun as almost every other John Wayne film. 10 years 9 months ago
