More impressive than I expected. Suspenseful. Rewarding.Youssef Othman
If I didnt read Tarantino's name at the end of the credits, I would have said that is a lazy ass director who is ripping off QT' style. Way too many shortcuts and trademark shots. Little but nothing new.Almost all of the first half of the movie should've been cut at the editing room. Things only got interesting at the SL.J dick monologue. Felt Tim Roth's performance was a Christoph Waltz parody.
The use of chapters storytelling was really character investing in Inglorious and Reservoir as they threw backstories here and there through out the main plot line but here it felt forced and didnt benefit the movie's characters or storyline.

A quentinesque Tarantino (or is it a tarantinissime Quentin?)MrDoog
Not overly impressed with Tarantino's latest installment.Expect prolonged spells of boredom with a couple of pretty looking shots, all of which is intended to build up the tension, but ultimately fails to get you properly invested in these characters despite dedicating about two full hours in doing so. As expected there's a little too much of the eye rolling self indulgence on the part of the director as he once again pilfers the works of other artists, and yet, there are some superb set pieces which remind you of how talented Tarantino is and how great he COULD be if he would only reign himself in a little more. Then, of no surprise, the whole thing descends into a blood splattering, brain exploding gore-fest and we're left wondering what was the point or if there even was one. This movie needs to go back into the editing studio and cut at least 60-90 minutes of its needlessly bloated runtime.
As for the cast, solid performances from Jason-Leigh, Walton Goggins, Bichir, Samuel L and Bruce Dern. Tim Roth and Russell put in dreadfully hammy performances (Russell's character reminded me of Family Guy's Peter Griffin doing a terrible John Wane impression) and Michael Madsen just sort of turns up
Not his worst movie but it's a far cry from his best work.

I found the 'red apple' mentions kind of forced. They brought to the table many times.

A goddamn masterpiece! 100 bags of popcorn!!!TomReagan
I'm a loyal Tarantino fan, ever since Reservoir Dogs, and I loved Django Unchained... BUT... ugh... This is my least favorite of his (until this, it was Jackie Brown - but I didn't hate it).The Ugly: Really liked the first half, but just about hated the second half. I thought the "twist" was ridiculous, which made the entire movie/plot ridiculous and pointless, IMO. Not to mention, EXTREMELY hard to believe.
The Bad: Also, I'm a huge fan of Ennio Morricone, but I don't remember hearing much from his score except for the beginning. Final gripe: shot in 70mm, I was expecting lots of landscape and beautiful scenary. 90% of this movie takes place inside a CABIN! And when they're outside, they're in land covered completely by SNOW!
The Good: QT delivered his trademark poetic dialogue - my favorite was the letter from Lincoln. Loved the cast and performances (especially Jennifer Jason Leigh - Tarantino sure has a knack for giving out Oscar-worthy roles, doesn't he?).

It feels like it should be so much better if that makes any sense. It has Tarantino's fingerprints all over it but it lacks some of the energy and pizazz of his former films. If I was a diehard Quentin fan anxiously awaiting his next movie then I think I would have been disappointed here. A solid "B-" I suppose.By the way, those of you calling it a spaghetti western should probably familiarize yourself with the term before tossing it around.

It's got no emotion. You wait and wait and then people get killed left and right and you don't really care. Average at best, I expected more from Tarantino.MoutardedShroom
it's not one of his best films, but it's definitely his most patient filmfbillys
Enjoyed it, but still think this as Tarantino's least interesting film.Siskoid
Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight is bloody drawing room mystery of a western with a fun cast and plenty of good moments, but it really didn't need to be three hours long. The extremely talky script really could have used a trim, as we have characters telling the same stories to different people, and making the same points several times. Realistic, maybe, but this isn't a piece of realism. It's a raucous comedy, and a slapstick comedy at that. As with Django Unchained's slavery humor, it may take you a few moments before allowing yourself to laugh at Jennifer Jason Leigh's treatment in this movie, but taking it as violent slapstick helps. Regardless of its flaws, the time flies by pretty fast, the characters and locations are interesting, the film impeccably shot, and it's Ennio Morricone's first western score in decades. But it's one that needs to grow on me, because as it stands, it's perhaps Tarantino's weakest film in terms of theme and story.Windill
Misoginous since the very first minutes. The hate of women is such a disgraceful disease!...
Too bad, because the film is otherwise pretty good.
Except it's racist, too.

Well, at least it was a better The Thing remake than the 2011 The Thing remake.Showing items 16 – 30 of 40
