For me, this is the Coen Brothers most hilarious work -- and maybe also their best.

The Coen Brothers' The Hudsucker Proxy is, among other things, a spoof of the rags-to-riches story, melding the sensibilities of Kafka, Capra, and pulp noir. At its best, this is one of those great satires of bureaucracy and corporate brutality, like Brazil and Joe Versus the Volcano, Tim Robbins' naive business graduate getting promoted beyond his station for nefarious purposes, even if divine irony lurks to make the perpetrators regret it. The Coen film this has the most in common with is Barton Fink, but it is in some ways its opposite, and thus possibly the post uplifting and positive of all Coen films. That, more than any strange twist at the end - which is something common to many of the brothers' films - is what fans might find jarring. I'd rather believe it's a spot of welcome sweetness in world of strange and cynical characters. Jennifer Jason Leigh is a lot of fun as fast-talkin' Lois Lane too.

I always thought this was a Terry Gilliam movie, but then I watched it and it's definitely Coen! It's not a brilliant movie, but it's fun and it's got heart. I love the visual style.

I think what deadendjob is trying to say is that this movie is, you know...for kids.

skillfully combining elements from not only Capra but also Sturges and even even De Palma!
an aesthetic, fantastic, exaggerated jollity!

Yep. Underrated. With several winks to It's a Wonderful Life (complete with angel) and to every other rise-fall-rise again movie plot. Especially The Lion King (1994) - "Circle of Life". The tough newsroom line is dripping with satire ... You gotta laugh.

Not as slick or witty as the Coen bros' top outings but extremely entertaining and endearing.

I was pleasantly surprised. One of the only coen brothers movies on no lists, so I was not expecting much, but I really enjoyed it.

Not as good as other Coen Bros. but still enjoyable. There is a lot to like about this but also a lot that works better in their other films. I like to view it as an experiment when their style was maturing and when they were preparing to make their names known by more than just cinéastes.

Feels strange and has an aura of family-friendly movie tense, despite the fact that its subject matter, the cutthroat world of business, is rather adult.
